Fantastic Falcon Artists from 7th & 8th Grade!

Our Falcon artists went on a grand art-venture with Thomas Harrison Middle School to Washington, DC to see the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden and the Renwick Gallery. The Renwick Gallery has the WONDER exhibit on display which includes nine contemporary artists taking over the gallery spaces to transform the spaces into inspiring installations. The day was a fun filled way to see a variety of sculptures in out nation's capitol before returning to the Capitol of CREATIVITY to create our own sculptures this spring!
One of the biggest challenges in planning a self guided field trip is how to engage students to explore the art on a variety of levels. To help students when exploring the gallery and sculpture garden I created a small booklet with maps, art information, scavenger hunt questions, and room to visually record their favorite sculptures with sketches! When planning the trip I found a variety of resources on the National Gallery of Art website to plan our visit to the sculpture garden. Many museums have maps, educational resources and information too guide your visit with students.
A few things to make your trip a great experience for all involved:
  • Booklets for students & guides for chaperones to help answer questions
  • One chaperone per groups of 4-5 students
  • Allow time for reflection and don't over book time in gallery to help the experience not seem rushed.

The booklet was created using Canva and educational resources from the NGA & Renwick Gallery. https://www.canva.com/design/DABvPuzPn2s/XjpP4HvcauYoDuNhv_S8KA/view?&utm_content=DABvPuzPn2s&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=sharebutton
What art-tastic field trips have you taken with your students?
What tips would you share that made your visit to the art museum great for your students and chaperones?
